Hi there,

what a great way to describe the "beauf" / "no beauf" attitude commonly found in Paris!I am French living in the UK but i had a painful two years life/work experience in Paris (being from the Alps, i was certainely considered a "plouc" and certainely a beauf as well (even i do not support or watch football!)).
Basically, the first thing you have to understand to really grasp the Paris attitude is that for Parisians, there is Paris (which indeed IS France), and then the rest, commonly known as "Province" (AKA countryside)that they are visiting for WE and holidays;;; Obviously, as they come from Paris, they are expecting to be respected and welcomed to the size of their rank; which is why Parisians are not really appreciated outside of Paris...
Well, if you want to find more about the origin of the beauf, have a look on wikipedia for CABU, as he is the cartoonist who created the character "le beauf" from which the expression comes.
Interesting thing to notice is that when the "beauf" cartoon character was created, it reflected a view from a left wing "french elite" to commonly mock the average french guy voting for conservative party and going to church every week before watching TV... today, the expression is used more by conservative elite to describe the average joe outside of their own circle...

Majority of frenchies are "beaufs" and "ringards", consume beauf culture, listening beauf music (Patrick Sebastien), viewing beauf cinema (les bronzes, les ch'tis) and beauf french series (Navarro, Commissaire Moulin), listening beauf french sports commentators (JM Larqué, Thierry Rolland) , beauf comics (Eric et Ramzi, Omaret Fred) and stupid TV anchors (Cauet, Castaldi, Pernaud, Reichman). The problem is that we are now in the 21st century and these frenchies are totally outdated and useless

In Ireland the word 'buff' is used to describe what an American would call a hick or a redneck.

Being interested in language and morphology myself, I am inclined to wonder if this is from whence came the Australian word, 'boofhead', which basically means stupid person. My apologies for the last sentence; correct grammar frequently leads to somewhat convoluted phrasing. To be fair, Fiona speaking leads to somewhat convoluted phrasing as well...
My Google search only returned with, 'Aucun résultat trouvé pour "morphology of boofhead"'. I suppose I shall have to leave this important question for another day.

So is Plouc for Beauf the equivalent of " C'est bath" for " c'est hype" ?

having such a conversation is a morning pleasure :D

Hi Guys!!

Anne: just quoting...
Polly: Agree with David all the way. Good idea for le verlan
Polly/Camille: Also, for the records, you know how many villages in Brittany start with 'Plou'. Well, originally, le plouc was the rural, clueless breton that just arrived in Paris. So I guess it has more of a rural beauf connotation. But it's a bit passé a word these days.
Emily: You can't make this up, right ?!!
Davis: Thx!
Kamel: Merci pour ces gentillesses. J'ai vécu un peu en Californie, ce qui a sans doute un peu aidé. Même si, il faut bien le reconnaître, les Californiens ne sont pas des orfèvres de l'anglais...
Lolo: Other beaufs can be found populating another Renaud song: "Mon HLM"
